Petworks Usaggie

$

Oh no….  It’s happened again!  I’ve found another doll I have decided needs to be in my collection based on the sheer cuteness of it– Petworks Usaggie.

Petworks, makers of Momoko’s, have another hit on their hands with this little bunny, Usaggie. Usaggie stand at 8 inches tall and is made of “non PVC”.  I’m assuming that’s engrish for some fancy plastic. This cute little bunny comes naked, but has a whole line of outfits, as shown in the picture below.  (Where they sell said outfits, haven’t been able to find that out, but I figure get the doll first, then worry about clothes!)

So far, I’ve only seen these guys on websites coming out of Japan and ebay sellers from Hong Kong.  Anyone have any leads on stores in the States that might have these pretty little bunnies?  Do you own one?  How do you like it?  Were you able to find outfits that fit it? Let me know!

Ball Jointed Dolls: A Wishlist

$

Ball jointed dolls have been around forever.  This post is about asian ball jointed dolls.  Typically, these dolls are made in resin, have inter-changable eyes and wigs, and can be found in really tiny sizes to super enormous sizes!

I bought my first BJD in August of 2008.  It was a Bobobie March. Standing at 27 cm, she’s tiny enough to fit in my room and wear easy to find Barbie clothes!

In October of 2008, I received a $25 ebay giftcard from co-workers and decided to put it toward a Doll In Mind Fantasia.  Fantasia is 43 cm tall and has the most fantastic ears.

2009 and 2010 were pretty dry years for me when it comes to resin ball jointed dolls.  This year, I plan on changing that…

Ball Jointed Dolls: A Wishlist

Doll In Mind- Flowne

This is the sister doll to my DIM Fantasia.  I love the wide eye’d expression on the doll.  She’s just so cute!  One day, I definitely want to to add this to my collection.

Doll In Mind- Arno

I’ve never seen this doll in person, but I always stop on it when searching the DIM website.  This guy is super tall– 61 cm!  The brown wig in the promo shots is adorable on him.

Leeke World- GeeYu

I’ve just stumbled upon this doll but love the innocent expression on this girl. Plus, she’s SD size.  The only problem with this doll is that she doesn’t come in a full set…  (I love spending the extra money to get a complete set- doll with outfit, eyes, wigs, etc all in one!)  Leeke World has fantastic wigs, btw.  Highly recommended!

Leeke World- Luke

Luke has a great sculpt.  It’s reminiscent of a manga or anime character.  I’d probably dress him up to look a little more boy-ish, but overall, I love the face!

Pipos- Mac

How cute is this little dog!  He’s pocket sized and adorable.  I really do want a Mac eventually.  The only downside is I find it hard to spend so much on something so tiny.  :-(  I need a boyfriend to buy him for me.  :-)

Iplehouse- Tania (Special UV/Circus Trapeze)

I’d never heard of Iplehouse before stumbling upon it last year on Den of Angels.  I really like their dolls, though I’ve never seen one in person.  The Tania sculpt is just really sweet looking with the big eyes and the face ups on the promo shots are just really really nice.

Dollzone- Annie, Yan, and Morphea

Dollzone has some nice prices and some really neat looking dolls.  I love the colors on these guys.  I just wish Annie in blue was wearing an outfit that wasn’t so revealing!!!

And no wishlist would be complete without a doll from Volks or Luts!  I’m just not sure which dolls I want from there yet!!!

Splurge Alert!!— Luts Kid Delf Aru and accessories

Remember the post I did a few weeks back about wanting to buy a new BJD for my collection?  Well, I’ve done it!  Sort of.  I won’t see the doll for probably two months, but I have placed an order!!!  I was all set on picking up a Leeke World Geeyu, but in the end, had to put that on hold due to her cost.  She would have run close to 650.00 for her to be complete with a wig, outfit, shoes…  I just can’t spend that at the moment.

So, I went back and looked on the Den of Angels and saw something I was looking for– a Luts group order!  I really like the Luts dolls I’ve seen in person, but have always held off ordering one because they don’t have any US distributors and shipping from Luts to the States…  *yikes* With this group order, I’ll still pay a bit in shipping, but hopefully it saves me a few bucks!!!

Do you want to see what I ordered?  Okay… Here ya go!!!

I won’t see this doll for a while, but I’m excited!!!!! Let’s hope none of these items are sold out by the time the Group Order goes through!!!

Luts Aru- Arrival Pictures!

Back in 2008, I opened up a thread on Den of Angels, a BJD board populated by quite a large number of collectors, looking for places to find Luts dolls in the US or Canada.  I mention in the post that I have my eye on a Kid Delf. Well, it’s finally come full circle.  I have no idea what Kid Delf I was thinking off back in 2008, but I am now the proud owner of a Kid Delf Aru.

My Luts Aru came via a group order over at Den of Angels.  Aru arrived exactly as expected and is playing nice with her fellow BJD’s! Want to see some pictures?  Oh, I know you do!!!  Enjoy the pic-spam!

The Arrival aka Putting It All Together:

Photobucket
Oh, a Luts Box! She’s really here! Honestly, I was clutching the box like it was going to fly away or something during the drive home after dolly delivery!

Photobucket
Beware slight nakedness! Along with Aru, I ordered her an outfit, shoes, and two wigs (one mohair, one regular).

Photobucket
And look, double jointed elbows! I don’t have any dolls with double jointed elbows. I love how much easier it is to pose her arm!

Photobucket
And here’s her pretty little face!!! Just like the promo pic!

Photobucket
Her shoes. Wish I had a pair!

Photobucket
Her outfit! One thing I wanted to do was get her clothes, as that seems to always be a thorn in my side!!!

Photobucket
Wig number one! Very cute yellow. Not blonde, but not sunshine! Perfect.

Photobucket
Wig number 2! Love the short mohair. Too bad mohair only stays pretty for a year or so. Still, love this wig!

Photobucket
And finally, the total look! Ordering a doll with all the elements coming at one time is definitely something I need to do more often!!!! And Luts… They know how to make a fantastic doll. Totally worth the money I paid for her!!!!

Want to see more pictures? Stay tuned!!!!

New Hujoo– Jake

$

As you know, I’m a huge Hujoo fan.  I own a Hujoo Wings and a Hujoo Baby.  Announced recently on ‘The Junky Spot’, a new Hujoo is coming to town and this time it’s (at the moment) a US exclusive release!

Look at the promo shot released over at ‘The Junky Spot’ of the new Hujoo Jake!

Jake is 24 cm and made of ABS plastic.  The main difference between Jake and the Wings/Hujoo line is his more proportional head mold. Jake, for example, fits a 6-7 wig while the original less proportional models (Wings/Hujoo) usually wear 7-8.  Jake will use 12mm eyes, as opposed to Hujoo’s usual 20mm.  Jake has a boy body, but looks like he could easily become a flat chested girl.  The official Junky Spot video reviewer did a nice comparison video. You can watch that video HERE.

My thoughts?  Well, I’m happy that Hujoo is still working on innovative, new dolls.  Cora, their new heavily jointed resin MSD girl, looks fantastic.  In terms of Jake, I like him, but he looks a bit too ‘normal’ to me.  I love the disproportioned bodies and the alien sort of look Hujoo’s tend to have.  I’ll probably be holding off on Jake until after I get a basic Hujoo (photo to the right).  But who knows?  Eventually, maybe I’ll splurge (which seeing he’s less than $40 wouldn’t exactly break the bank) and pick up this little guy!

You can pick Jake up at The Junky Spot.  What do you think of Jake?

New Junky Spot Exclusive Coming Soon!

$
0
0

The Junky Spot is the leading online BJD retailer in the United States.  Owner Emory runs a very tight ship with a great line of ‘in stock, ready to ship’ dolls and super quick shipping times.

Over the years, The Junky Spot has been a strong supporter of Hujoo, a BJD company known for high quality, inexpensive ABS ball jointed dolls, and (I think) has had a lot to do with the success of the Hujoo line here in the States.

Emory has been ‘teasing’ his facebook followers with images of his newest exclusive and I’m here to tell you a bit more about the awesome’ness is that about to hit The Junky Spot!

I’d like to introduce you to Freya, one of the first affordable ‘cat’  BJD’s to hit the doll scene.  Freya, the newest Junky Spot exclusive, will retail at the crazy low price of $50.00 (US), which is much better for the wallet than, say, ordering a Pipos cat (however adorable they are!).  Freya is around 23cm tall.

Please note:  The pictures used in this post were originally posted on The Junky Spots homepage/newsletter.  The dolls pictured are prototypes, so there may be changes in the final release.

Freya will be debuting in white and dark grey.  The original release is limited to 250 per color, but a wide release for the white cat is in the works.  There is no face up option, but it can’t be that hard to do a face up for a cat, right?

Hujoo has created a few new elements for this exclusive, mainly creating super cute cat paws and a tail! The inside of the head has changed slightly, as well, and has been updated with a new, more stable way to install the eyes in this adorable kitty cat.

You can see Freya in action in this official Youtube review.  It’s a little long, but it gives you some great insight into what makes Freya unique among other Hujoo’s.

I am loving the grey Freya.  Seriously.  I’ve always wanted an anthro BJD, but could never warrant paying upwards of $200 for something so small.  Freya is definitely in my price range AND adorable!  Hujoo keeps improving with every doll they release, so I expect that Freya will not disappoint.

You can see a ton of photos of Freya in The Junky Spot forums.  Freya is set for a September release, so keep your eyes peeled to The Junky Spot!  I’m pretty sure the limited releases will go *very* fast!

What do you think of Freya?  What color do you prefer?  Are you excited about the idea of an affordable anthro BJD?  Share your thoughts!

EDIT (early 9/12):  As of last night, the first shipment of Freya (both colors) has arrived.  The White Freya is (as of this writing) still available.  The Grey Freya is currently sold out.  If you are looking for the Grey Freya, don’t worry just yet– there’s another shipment due into The Junky Spot before the limited 250 run is over!  Head over to The Junky Spot, click ‘Hujoo’ on the side bar, and then ‘Hujoo 24cm’ for details on the adorable BJD’s!

EDIT (late 9/12):  Looks like the first batch of both colors is sold out.  Keep an eye on Junky Spot’s page for more info regarding the second shipment!

Hujoo Freya Box Opening

Last week, I received three little Hujoo Freya’s in the mail, two grey and one white. Of the three, two of them are mine.  The third belongs to my mom who has already given her girl a face up!  (Way to go, Mom!).  My two Freya’s are still in ‘pre- face up’ mode– meaning they’re hanging out on their paper plates waiting for me find the time to give them pretty faces!  I know you’re all anxious to see these new additions to the Hujoo family, so without further ado, here are a few photos I’ve taken of Freya!

My Hujoo Family

Currently in pre-face up mode!

Two Freya’s dressed in Barbie clothes

How adorable!

They’re joints work really well! (Notice how they’re standing on their own and holding their arms up!)

Until then, I’ve gone ahead a posted a ‘box opening’ video on my youtube account.  I’ve never recorded one of these before, so it was an experience!  I hope you enjoy this little ‘sneak peek’!

When the dolls have face up’s, I plan on posting an actual video review and tons of photos, so keep your eyes peeled for that!

Did you order a Freya?  What do you think about her?  Share your thoughts below!

Introducing Island Doll Artemis

$

This Christmas, I received a gift card for Denver Doll Emporium.  I held off on spending it until I found an affordable, in stock BJD.  Finally, a few weeks ago, I found the doll and ordered.  I’d like to introduce you to Island Doll Artemis. (Facebook fans, you’ve already seen some of these photos!)

This post is VERY picture heavy!  You’ve been warned!

Island Doll Artemis Promo Shot

Island Doll Artemis Promo Shot

My Artemis arrived only with eyes, not all the bells and whistles you see above.  She’s my first Yo-SD sized doll.  Her eye lashes were falling off when she arrived, hence the one on/one off state you see in this picture.  I’m not a huge fan of eye lashes on BJD’s to begin with, so it was no big deal!

Artemis‘s eyes were held in with tons of putty!  Also, it seems that one of the magnets unglued in transit.  Like the eye lashes, not a huge deal.  I can just glue it back in!  To save money, I decided to not buy an outfit or wig for her until convention season (this summer).  In the following pictures, she’s wearing the only dress I have that fits Yo-SD’s and the only wig I found that fits!  I hope to pick up more for her during ACEN 2013 this summer.

I plan on doing a full review on her when I get more accessories for her, but here’s a quick rundown on my thoughts.  I love her size!  I didn’t really know what ‘Yo-SD’ meant when I ordered her, but I really, really love it!  Artemis has weight to her, which I like.  She seems like a great value for her price! Artemis holds poses and stands very well. I’m very happy with her.

As I mentioned before,  I’ll do a full blown review once I get more for her (outfits, wigs, shoes, etc!  Maybe even a new name?).  Until then, why not watch the video I did for her box opening?

Dolly Review: Junky Spot Exclusive Hujoo Freyr

$

0

Hujoo‘s are triple threats– they’re adorable, affordable, and easy to customize.  And here for you today is a review of the newest Hujoo to hit the market, FreyrFreyr is exclusive to one of my favorite online shops The Junky Spot and is the male counterpart to last years Freya (also exclusive).

The Gang

The Gang

If you missed my Freyr box opening, you can check it out here.  Here’s a little back story on this little guy.  Freyr is 23 cm tall, is strung (like other Hujoo’s and BJD’s), made of ABS,  and has the same ‘clickable’ posing ability that traditional Hujoo‘s have.  He is an anthro BJD, meaning he’s made to look like an animal.

Hujoo Freyr

Hujoo Freyr

In this case, Freyr was created to look like a cat.  18mm eyes are recommended and if you were to wig him, he’d be a 6.5-7. Keep in mind, you’d have to OOAK the wig a bit to make room for his ears.   Freyr comes in two colors– white and light grey.  I received both for this review.

Freyr's Pre Face Up

Freyr’s Pre Face Up

A very important thing to note is that Freyr, like his female companion Freya, arrives at your door without any sort of face up.  It’s up to you to create Freyr‘s character with a custom face up.  I decided not to jinx myself by doing both face up’s myself, so I asked my mom to do the white Freyr‘s look.  In the end, both Freyr’s turned out very different and, if I may say so, very adorable!  (As a side note, my light grey Freyr has a dark grey face up, so you’ll notice he’s a bit two-toned at the moment.  I plan on blushing his body later to make the difference in tones less harsh.)

Freyr's Post Face Up

Freyr’s Post Face Up (with a Freya on the far left)

Let’s go top to bottom, shall we?  As many of you Freya owners are probably wondering, how’s the head cap?  Is it a pain in the neck like Freya‘s?  Do you need sharp objects to take it off or put it on?  Do you need to remodel the pegs that connect the front to the back?  Nope.  None of the above.  The head cap goes on ten times better than Freya‘s.  No knives or sharp objects required!  I still used an icing knife to get the head cap started, but once I separated it the front from the back, it was off in under 4 minutes.  Putting it on was much easier, too.

DSCN0737 copy

Notice the difference in placement of the head cap. Freya (left) Freyr (right)

You’ll notice the difference in the head cap design here.  The mold itself has thicker sides and is designed to encompass less of the back of the head, as opposed to Freya, who has a head cap that nearly cuts her head in half.

Notice the new head cap design. It's thicker and works ten times better!

Notice the new head cap design. It’s thicker and works ten times better!

A big thank you to Emory at The Junky Spot for listening to his customers concerns about the original Freya head cap.  This is much, much better!

Freyr In White

Freyr In White

Freyr‘s face is adorable.  I’m not usually crazy about dolls with narrow eyes, but Freyr has won me over.  His eyes are slightly more narrow and slanted than Freya‘s open eyes. He has a more ‘cat like’ look to him, actually.  You can see clear differences between him and his female counter part.

Two of Kind-- Freyr (left), Freya (right)

Two of Kind– Freyr (left), Freya (right)

As far as his body goes, he has he same amount of joints you’d find on other Hujoo‘s, along with his special claw like hands and feet.

Claws

Claws

His arms and legs are essentially the same as Freya‘s.  Freyr holds poses well, as I have come to expect with well strung Hujoo‘s.

Notice the large knob at his neck

Notice the large knob at his neck

The one downside is the knob at the base of his neck.  I never noticed it on my Freya, because her head cap never fit well enough to notice, but you can see it plainly with Freyr.  There is a knob where his head cap meets his neck that you can see when you tilt his head at various angles.  Sometimes it makes his neck area look really strange for photo’s.  It would be great if they could make it slightly more ‘fluid’ looking.

Exploring

Exploring

As far as clothing goes, just like Freya, he can wear Barbie clothing with a little tweaking.  Our Freyr‘s are wearing some of the few Ken clothes we own.  The white Freyr is sporting some My Scene surfer shorts that have been fitted for him with a few stitches.  The light grey Freyr is wearing some of Ken’s wardrobe.  The waist is big in both cases.  I hope to pick up some cooler Ken clothes for him next shopping trip.

Overall, I like Freyr just as much as I did Freya!  They really are adorable.  And even better, they’re an affordable BJD for those of us who don’t like spending hundreds of dollars on one doll.  I think The Junky Spot and Hujoo should look into possibly seeing if they can make the neck knob a little less noticeable, but that is my only real issue with Freyr.  They did fantastic things with the head cap (yay!) and I look forward to seeing their future releases? I, personally, would like to see a new kind of animal.  A dog? Bunny?  I’m sure they’d make it super cute!  I highly recommend Freyr.  He’s a great BJD!

New At The Junky Spot- Nano Freya and Mystic Kids

$

0

It’s no secret that I tend to buy the majority of my ball jointed dolls from The Junky Spot.  There are a few reasons why.  First, Emory, the owner, only lists products that he has in hand.  I’m not the most patient person when it comes to waiting for dolls to arrive so that is a huge plus!  Second, he ships super fast and since we’re both based in the US, I get my new doll in days, not weeks or months!

The Junky Spot has two new items that I thought I’d spotlight.  First, they’ve added a new resin BJD to their already diverse line up of doll manufacturers- Mystic Kids.  I went to the Mystic Kids website to learn a bit more about them, but alas, the ‘About Us’ was a blank page.  While I can’t share any company history with you, I can at least share some promo shots of the dolls produced by Mystic Kids.

Mystic Kids SD (1/3) Lawrence

Mystic Kids SD (1/3) Lawrence

What I’m really interested in with this doll company are their 58cm dolls. At US $398.00 with a factory face up, they seem pretty well priced.  Don’t get me wrong, they’re still a lot of money, but much less expensive than some other BJD companies that want upwards of $600.00 for their SD sized dolls.

Lawrence is my favorite, I think.  My BJD collection consists of many female dolls.  For years I’ve been on the look out for the perfect male SD doll and he’s definitely a contender.  Many male dolls have sculpts that look very, well, female.  Lawrence does have some ‘pretty boy’ features, but also has (as my mom put it) an anime sort of look about him, that keeps him looking like a guy.  I like it!

Mystic Kids MSD (1/4) Caroline

The MSD dolls are also reasonably priced at just over US $200 with a face up.  These 45cm dolls have faces that are priceless.  They also have that anime sort of vibe going for them.  I really like their large eyes.

Mystic Kids 27cm Vanetta

Mystic Kids 27cm Vanetta

While I’m not over the moon about the 27cm dolls, I thought I’d post a picture of Vanetta here because I instantly saw a character in her– Cardcaptor Sakura.

Cardcaptor Sakura

You may not see it, but I think this sculpt would be the perfect Sakura!

There’s a new anthro in town over at The Junky Spot and it looks adorable.  You’ve read on my blog about the Hujoo/Junky Spot collaborations Freya and Freyr.  Another new anthro has been introduced– Nano Freya.

Nano Freya from The Junky Spot/Hujoo

Nano Freya from The Junky Spot/Hujoo

Nano Freya is 12cm tall, which is the same height as the Hujoo babies (according to specs) that were released a few years back.  Nano Freya comes in two colors– white and light grey.  They are made from ABS, just like the other Hujoo’s.

Nano Freya White

These guys are available now and priced at the very affordable price of US$27.99.  Awesome price, right?  Like the other anthro’s from Hujoo/Junky Spot, there is no face up option.  These guys arrive strung, but without a face up, eyes, wigs, or clothing.

There will be more Hujoo fun coming to the blog in future weeks.  Until then, you can check out The Junky Spot to see the new Mystic Kids and Nano Freya’s.

Dolly Review: Hujoo/Junky Spot Exclusive Nano Freya

$

Earlier this month, I did a quick write up on the new Nano Freya, the new anthro cat from Hujoo and The Junky Spot.  Here is the review!

Nano Freya

Nano Freya

Let’s start off with the basics.  Nano Freya is 12cm tall and takes 12mm eyes.  While she shares the same name as the 27cm female cat, you can choose to make this little kitty male or female. Nano Freya comes in two colors– white and light grey.  Nano Freya is sold without a face up.  Also, you’ll need to supply your own eyes for these guys.

Nano Freya and Freya

Nano Freya and Freya

I know that some of you aren’t fans of animal dolls.  I, however, am a sucker for most anthro BJD’s and these Nano Freya’s are no exception. Starting from the top, Nano Freya’s face is super cute. She has large, round eyes that fit with the Hujoo aesthetic and cat-like features.  The head is a similar size to the Hujoo Babies that were released a few years back.

Headcap

Headcap

Compared to the 27cm Freya and Freyr, the headcap on these guys is fantastic.  No special tools are required to detach the head from the head cap besides your nail.  And you don’t even have to break that to take it off!  Unlike the 27cm anthro’s, the eyes you use in these must be held in with eye putty.  They do not come with any sort of ring to hold the eyes.  This works in our benefit, I think, because the head is so small that the less you have to jam in there, the better!

Baby Is and Nano Freya

Baby Is and Nano Freya

As always, Nano Freya is made of ABS and is strung.  Her body is almost exactly the same as the Hujoo Babies.  The only difference I can see is that instead of hands and feet, Freya has paws. One thing I really like about this baby body is that it doesn’t have that annoying ‘ring’ around the neck that the 27cm dolls have.  It helps make poses look more natural.

Nano Freya vs Baby Is

Nano Freya’s feet

This tiny Hujoo body has joints on the shoulders, elbows, wrists, thighs, knees and ankles.  While the body is tiny, it poses well.  I was able to put Nano Freya in a bunch of really cute poses.  On top of that, she stands well.

One thing I really like about these Nano Freya’s is that they are very much ‘pocket pets’.  They’re inexpensive, which means you don’t have to worry too much about traveling with them.  Nano Freya isn’t heavy, but she feels like she has ‘substance’ to her.  These are the perfect size to put in your purse and take with you wherever you go.

I quite like these Nano Freya’s.  They are a great size and pose well!  Better still, they’re affordable.  My only concern with this line of exclusives is how many anthro cats can you produce until the concept becomes stale.  I’m not sure, but it would be great to enhance this anthro line with a new animal or two.  Nano Freya is exclusive to The Junky Spot.

I think I really need to call 2014 the year of the Pullips!  First, there was the purchase of my own Taeyang Gackt and then there was a mystery box featuring two Pullips sent for review from my favorite online BJD store, The Junky Spot!  Needless to say, that’s a lot of Pullip‘s to grace my doorstep within one month!

This Pullip, the first of at least two Pullip reviews, should be quite familiar to ‘Puella Magi Madoka Magica’ fans.  She’s none other than Tomeo Mami.  Mami was introduced early on in the anime series ‘Puella Magi Madoka Magica’.

Madoka Magica Characters

Madoka Magica Characters

A 12 episode series, ‘Puella Magi Madoka Magica’ is a dark magical girl tale that follows a select number of girls as they are offered the chance to become more than ordinary.  I had tried to watch this a few months back and got through half of it, but it just wasn’t my thing.  Many people, though, really enjoyed this anime.  It’s no surprise that Groove collaborated with the production to create Pullip’s of not just one, but three characters.

Tomeo Madoka

Tomeo Mami

Tomeo Mami is an adorable Pullip.  Groove did a great job taking the anime characters look and recreating that in doll form.  We’ll start off with the basics.  Just like most Pullip’s, Mami is around 12 inches tall and is wigged.  Officially, the wig is non-removeable, however I’ve seen many reports that the wigs have very little glue holding them on the dolls head.  This makes me believe it would be pretty simple to switch up Pullip wigs if you wanted to! That being said, unless you start trying to remove the wig, it hugs her head well and you don’t have to worry about it falling off.

Tomeo Mami

Tomeo Mami

Mami has pale yellow hair styled in two long sausage curl pigtails, with bangs/fringe.  I find her hair to be rather soft and it seems to be keeping the sausage curl really well!  I’m very happy she has hair that is manageable.  I’ve found many Pullips to have hair that is a bit too long for my taste, but this is just right.

Tomeo Mami

Tomeo Mami

Tomeo Mami

Tomeo Mami

Pullip’s factory bodies are the main reason I don’t have many of them in my collection.  I’m not 100% happy with the limited jointing on Pullips.  As it stands, the factory bodies allow for some movement, but far less than your typical bjd or obitsu body.  Mami body is put together similar to a Monster High Create a Monster, so don’t worry if you find that you accidentally pulled off a hand while changing her outfit!

Tomeo Mami (MiWorld Lollipop not included with doll)

Tomeo Mami (MiWorld Lollipop not included with doll)

She has joints at her shoulder, elbow, wrist, thigh, knee and ankle.  She also has a joint right under her bust, which doesn’t do much other than help her tilt slightly forward or backward.  Her head turns left and right, but does not tilt up or down because it’s not on a ball joint.  Pullips don’t stand well on their own b/c of the body proportions, but come with a stand for display purposes.

Tomeo Mami

Tomeo Mami

One of the high points for me when it comes to Pullips are their faces.  Pullips faces are oversized, so while they’re on a 1/6 scale body, their heads come off larger, more similar to an MSD bjd than a 1/6 scale BJD.  I love that.  With their oversized heads come large, anime like eyes.  Another thing I love!  In Mami’s case, her heart shaped face features large dark yellow eyes.

Tomeo Mami

Tomeo Mami

She has light brown eye brows, hidden by her bangs/fringe and dark brown eye shadow highlighting her lids.  She has light blushing on her cheeks and natural colored lips done up with a bit of gloss.

Tomeo Mami

Tomeo Mami

There is something to be said about the simpleness of her face up.  It gives her look a sense of maturity, I think.  I also love the dark yellow eyes.  Some times, Pullip eyes are some very strange colors and they don’t always appeal to me.  However, for being a color I’m not used to on dolls, I really think these eye chips look great in Mami!

Eye Mechanism

Eye Mechanism

As expected, Mami’s eyes move left and right when you move a tab in the back of her head.  Her eyes also close when you hit another tab in the back of her head.  Both functions work fine on Mami.

Mami wears an adorable hat.  It’s the same brown seen on her outfit and looks adorable with the sausage curls.  The hat is decorated with a flower button and a white feather.  The hat can be attached to the dolls wig with a hair clip that is sewn in to the hat itself.

Tomeo Mami

See the clip?

See the clip?

There are many pieces to Mami’s outfit.  Mami comes dressed in her magical girl outfit (ie: the outfit she wears when protecting the city from harm).

Tomeo Mami

Tomeo Mami

This includes a good number of separates.  What you’ll notice right off the bat is her amazing brown buckle corset.  It is fastened with velcro over her white high neck short sleeve blouse, also fastened with velcro.

Tomeo Mami

Tomeo Mami (ignore the stand!)

The blouse and the corset really bring out this doll’s large chest.  I was surprised by her chest size in this outfit, actually, because my other Pullips have much smaller busts.

Tomeo Mami

Tomeo Mami

Before investigating, I assumed she was just on a different kind of body.  It turns out, however, that Mami is wearing a padded bra.  Yep, you read that right!  Under the blouse is a dolly sized bra that covers all the important bits while adding to them a twinge.

Tomeo Mami

Tomeo Mami

In the box, it looks like Mami wears long sleeves.  In actuality, she wears a short sleeved blouse and arm warmers.  The arm warmers are the one part of this outfit that have given me a bit of trouble.  They looked great out of the box, but after a bit of posing, they wrinkled and stretched out quite a bit.

Tomeo Mami

Tomeo Mami

Continuing down, Mami wears a mustard yellow skirt.  It works really well with the brown on the corset and the pale yellow of her hair.  There’s a little bit of tulle lining the skirt, and of course, the doll is wearing undies!  One thing I love about this Pullip in particular is that the skirt is long enough to cover everything that needs to be covered, which isn’t always the case with anime inspired dolls!

Tomeo Mami

Tomeo Mami

Instead of tights, Mami wears striped thigh high’s, the majority of which are covered by her brown knee length boots.  Her boots are made of a rubber like material and are easy to put on and take off.  They stay on well, too.  I was very happy that the shoes were fine outside of the box.  Two of my Pullips purchased previously had issues with the shoes being sticky.  Thankfully, these are were just fine!

Tomeo Mami's School Outfit

Tomeo Mami’s School Outfit

Also included in this set is Mami’s school outfit!  This three piece set includes raspberry tights, a blue checkered skirt and a light yellow uniform top with white sleeves and red highlights.  What you should also see on the top is a red bow in the top center.  This bow, unfortunately, fell off almost instantly after I tried this outfit on an obitsu body I had handy.  It seems it was only held on with one or two tiny stitches.

Tomeo Mami comes with a few flower shaped accessories. Not sure what they are!

Tomeo Mami comes with a few flower shaped accessories. Not sure what they are!

Mami comes with a few extra’s in her box.  Besides the outfit, you’ll receive some flower like button accessories.  I don’t know what these are.  They must have something to do with the anime, though!  She, also, comes with a stand and her trading card.  EDIT: DollGirl4 said that Mami wears these flowers in her hair while dressed in her school outfit!  Mystery solved!

Mami is a very cute doll and her transition from anime to Pullip was done really well!  I think the Pullip stock bodies could do with a little work.  I wish they had a twinge more posing ability.  (I plan on switching the stock body out with an obitsu body soon to rectify this!)

Putting the body issue aside, I really like this Pullip Tomeo Mami.  She has a pretty face, a fun hair style and is a great representation of her animated character!  I think she’ll be a great addition to my (small) Pullip collection!

Mami is currently available at The Junky Spot, as well as other online Pullip retailers!

Two weeks ago, I ordered a Makie.  And today?  She arrived!  Now, don’t get too excited yet.  This isn’t a full review.  This is a box opening post!  Almost immediately after getting home from work, I sat down in front of the camera to record a box opening video.  Watch it below!

This is Siena, my Makie.  As I’ve only had her for a few short hours, I haven’t had time to take many photos. Rest assured, it’s on my to do list!!!  For now, enjoy this little sneak peek of Siena!

Siena, real vs computer image

Siena, real vs computer image

First impressions?  I like her a lot!  I think she looks great and very similar to my original computer image. Because Makie is a new doll line, I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect.  I’m very pleased with the face up and with the body coloring.

Expect more on Siena in coming weeks!  For now, though, feel free to share your thoughts and ask questions about this Makie or Makies in general!

Dolly Review: Hujoo Nano Rabi

Hujoo is on a roll.  New to the Hujoo 12 cm family is Nano Rabi, an anthro bunny!  I’ve been asking for some variety in their anthro line and this definitely fits the bill!

Nano Rabi

Nano Rabi

Nano Rabi is a 12 cm rabbit. While I’m not sure what wigs will fit this little rabbit, she wears 12 mm eyes.  Nano Rabi currently comes in three colors- white, light grey and pink.

Photo from The Junky Spot featuring all three color choices.

As usual, Nano Rabi is made of strung ABS plastic.  She’s sold without a face up, eyes or wig.

Hujoo Nano Rabi

Hujoo Nano Rabi

For some of us, hearing ‘no face up’ is a bit scary sounding, but here’s the thing– Hujoo’s are pretty easy to customize.  If I can do it, you can do it!

Nano Rabi’s body is the same body used for the Nano Freya, right down to the clawed hands and feet.

She’s strung tightly and holds poses well.  Nano Rabi has joints at the shoulders, elbows, wrists, thighs, knees, ankles and chest.  Of course, the head tilts up, down, left and right, allowing for lots of movement!

Nano Rabi

Nano Rabi, pink with face up by me

The thing that I think is most important to talk about regarding Nano Rabi is the unique face mold created for this ball jointed doll.  Nano Rabi has an egg shaped sort of head with short pointy bunny ears.  The head cap, that has in the past been complicated to take off/put on, works fine.  Instead of having two pegs inside the head, there is just one.  It’s pretty easy to twist Nano Rabi’s head cap off.

Nano Rabi

Nano Rabi, white with face up done by my mom

The eye holes are round, not almond shaped like most bjd’s I’ve seen.  That worried me a bit, as I wasn’t sure if that meant we would need different eyes for this anthro.

Nano Rabi with face up by me

Nano Rabi with face up by me

Thankfully, though, my worries were in vain.  Nano Rabi takes regular 12mm eyes.  They look, to me, very different inside a Nano Rabi head than a traditional almond shaped eye- much more animal like.  I really like the effect!

One very important thing to note is that unlike the large Hujoo’s, you will need putty to hold your eyes in.  Nano Rabi doesn’t come with eye attachments.  It is a little tough putting the eyes into these guys, because their head is so tiny, but hang in there and you’ll get it!

While I would have preferred more floppy ears,  I understand that may have been a little difficult to do.  I’m very happy with how these guys photograph and am loving that they are pretty much to scale for MiWorld and AG Mini rooms.

Nano Rabi

Nano Rabi

Overall, I think Nano Rabi is super cute.  The 12 cm size is perfect for a pocket or purse doll, easy to customize, and most importantly, affordable!  Nano Rabi is available at The Junky Spot or wherever else Hujoo‘s are sold.

BJD Wig Tutorial

I am very bad a wig making.  I tried my hand at it last year and failed miserably. (Much fun fur was lost in this quest!)  Needless to say, I’ve retired from wig making! (And the fun fur rejoiced!)  My mom, however, found a really great tutorial for making a yarn wig on Flickr the other day.  With nothing better to do, she decided to try it out and the results were fantastic! This TARDIS blue wig is being modeled on a MSD Bobobie Pixie.

The tutorial was put together by Flickr user ghilie01.  It’s a photo album tutorial (ie: click the image and the instructions are on the right for that step).  If you are handy with a crochet hook and latch hook, this should be a pretty easy tutorial to follow!  For the wig pictured above, we followed all the steps, but one. As we don’t have a sewing machine, we didn’t ‘stitch’ a part into this wig.  For a first attempt, I think this turned out pretty awesome!  Awesome enough for me to want to share this with you, readers!

So next time you’re bored, why not try making your ball jointed doll a new wig? And then stop by and share the experience down below in the comment area!

Dolly Review: Jun Planning Ai Ball Jointed Doll Painted Sage

$

For months now, the web has been abuzz over a number of Jun Planning dolls being found in discount store, Tuesday Morning.  They’ve eluded me and my mother every visit– until now!  My last visit to Tuesday Morning brought two new kinds of dolls into my diverse collection.  One of these was the much talked about Ai Ball Jointed Doll.  The other, a J-Doll, will be reviewed in a different post!

Ai Ball Jointed Doll, Painted Sage

Ai Ball Jointed Doll, Painted Sage

Painted Sage

Painted Sage

Ai’s were manufactured by Jun Planning, maker of Pullips and J-Dolls.  According to Pullips and Junk, a fantastic Pullip site, these were released between 2007 and 2013.  Both Ai’s my mom and I picked up during this shopping trip, Painted Sage and Cuphea, were released in 2007 and 2008.  There are multiple face molds and face ups.  Many, if not all of the dolls, seem to be named after flowers.  A quick side note here:  the cashier was totally freaked out by all the dolls we purchased during our visit.  She seemed to think Painted Sage was strange looking. Me?  I think Painted Sage looks just right!

Painted Sage

Painted Sage

Painted Sage

Painted Sage

Ai’s are made of ABS and are around 5″ tall.  Originally priced around $79.99 (according to the Tuesday Morning tag), those who find them at Tuesday Morning could walk away with one for $29.99.  eBay seems to have these guys around the $30.00 price point, as well.  A fantastic price for an adorable starter BJD like this one.

Painted Sage Without Wig

Painted Sage Without Wig

Like your traditional BJD’s, Ai’s are customizable.  They have a magnetic head cap that allows you to get into the head and change the eyes.  A note to those who might be giving this to a child.  The magnetic head cap on my Ai is covered in magnet fragments.

It seems that this isn’t normal, though, as my mom’s was just your normal magnet.  Before giving it to a child, I would double check that the head cap is fragment free.

Hujoo Baby, Ai Painted Sage, Junky Spot Nano Rabi

Hujoo Baby Is, Ai Painted Sage, Junky Spot Nano Rabi

I’m not exactly sure what size eye came with Painted Sage, but it must be around 10mm, because the head is very similar in size to the Hujoo Babies, who wear that size eye.  Eye putty is included, in case you need it.  My Ai, Painted Sage, has a contraption in its head that allows the eyes to stay in without putty (as seen in an earlier photo).  My mom’s Cuphea, however, needed putty to hold the eyes in.  (Strangely enough, my mom’s putty was in a fancy cardboard box, while mine was just packaged in a plastic bag!)

Painted Sage's Wig

Painted Sage’s Wig

Velcro in Wig

Velcro in Wig

Painted Sage is wigged.  She has factory placed velcro on her head and inside her wig.  Lining the pieces up can be hard to do, but the wig stays on well, even when a little off.  For those with Hujoo babies, you’re in luck!  With velcro, this wig size seems practically perfect for tiny Hujoo’s.  Painted Sage has a long, dirty blonde wig.  It’s nice and looks high quality.  I can’t say I know what wig size this is, though.  What wig sizes fit your Ai’s?

Hujoo Baby is, Ai Painted Sage, Junky Spot Nano Rabi

Hujoo Baby is, Ai Painted Sage, Junky Spot Nano Rabi

Painted Sage

Painted Sage

She is jointed in multiple places, including her shoulders, elbow, wrist, hip, knee and ankle.  Because she’s classified as a ball jointed doll, she is strung with a thin white string.  If your doll is flopsy, you may want to re-string her.  Painted Sage arrived well strung.  She stands well on her own and holds poses.

Painted Sage

Painted Sage

The only other tinies of this size I have are made by Hujoo.  They have a joint in the torso area.  Ai’s don’t have a torso joint.  A torso joint would have added a nice bit of extra pose-ability, but Painted Sage does well with the joints she has.

Painted Sage

Painted Sage

Painted Sage

Painted Sage

Ai’s come with a number of accessories, depending on which one you get.  Painted Sage wears an adorable off white dress with red decorations. She wears pantaloons and an apron, too. According to one description of her, she was styled with Little Red Riding Hood in mind.  Her main accessory is her blue hooded cape.

Painted Sage

Painted Sage

I love her cape. It’s so neat and looks fantastic on her.  It gives her a very ‘mystical’ kind of feel!  She comes with socks and shoes, too.  I had a lot of trouble getting the shoes over the socks, so in the end, I took the socks off.  The shoes are okay, they just fit oddly.

Painted Sage

Painted Sage

They’re my least favorite part of the outfit and varied between the two dolls we picked up during our shopping trip.  They seem both too large and too small at the same time.

Baby Hujoo Is in Ai outfit, Ai in a Mattel outfit, Nano Rabi in Ai pantaloons

Baby Hujoo Is in Ai outfit, Ai in a Mattel outfit, Nano Rabi in Ai pantaloons

If you’re looking for clothing for your Hujoo tinies, you should definitely keep an eye out for Ai’s.  Outfits with long sleeves will be a bit troublesome on anthro’s, but short sleeve or no sleeve Ai outfits should fit Hujoo tinies.  At least, my Hujoo baby fits Painted Sage’s outfit.  I couldn’t test it on my anthro’s, unfortunately, because of her paws.

Painted Sage and Kero

Painted Sage and Kero

Painted Sage

Painted Sage

Painted Sage has an adorable face up! I love her wide eyed expression.  She has a white shadow directly over her eye that is topped with a very light red.  She has light brown eye brows and pursed mauve lips.  I don’t see any blush on Painted Sage.

Packaging of Cuphea

Packaging of Cuphea

Ai’s are packaged in a white, magnetic box that looks like a book.  The packaging is solid and totally reusable as a treasure or accessory box, but, in my opinion, a little over done.  I imagine the dolls could have been a little more affordable when they first debuted if the box hadn’t been so fancy.

Painted Sage in AG Mini Room

Painted Sage was a steal at $29.99 and totally worth every penny I paid for her!  The Ai Ball Jointed Doll seems like a great little starter doll for those who are interested in BJD’s, but don’t want to take the leap into expensive resin. Because she’s ABS, she’s durable and purse friendly.  She photographs really well, too!  If I were you, I would most definitely add ‘visit Tuesday Morning’ to your next to-do list!

Collection Close Up: Jem Inspired Make It Own Pullip with Obitsu Body

$

A while back, I did a video for The Junky Spot talking about Groove’s Make it Own Pullips.  I am finally ready to debut the finished doll!  It took a while to get to this point.  I had decided earlier that I was going to just use the outfit that came with my original Jem doll, since my doll doesn’t wear it, but needed to work out the other details like wigging, body or shoes.

First, I needed to find the perfect wig.  It took a few weeks of searching, but eventually, I found something that spoke to me from For My Doll.  I lucked out and found a great group order over at Den of Angels, which allowed me to save on shipping. Nothing is worse than finding the perfect wig, just to realize shipping would be twice the cost of the product.  Though it may surprise some, it’s not overly pink.  I wanted it to be a call back to the original Jem doll that was released ever so long ago.  If you recall, she didn’t have a head of bright pink hair, but a mixture of both blonde and light pink hair.  That’s the look I wanted.

Jem Promotional Art

Jem Promotional Art

The second thing I needed to take care of was finding a better body for her. The Pullip body has issues.  It lacks posability that other doll lines have.  To fix this problem, most turn to Obitsu bodies.  I decided on getting a 27cm soft bust body, to add a bit of height to her.  In hindsight, I should have gotten one with a little more of a bust, to make the dress fit a bit better, but alas, it is what it is.  In pure Junky Spot fashion, it arrived just a handful of days after ordering.

I ordered shoes from a seller on Etsy, Sunnybobo.  I wanted something more chunky than heels for this doll, because a huge goal of mine was for her to stand on her own and I didn’t trust heels to allow her to do that.

After two months of waiting, I can finally say my Custom Jem Pullip is complete. Put your hands together for Jem!

Now, I am going to wait for The Junky Spot to get in more Make It Own kits, in hopes of making Shana, Aja and Kimber.  Maybe even a Synergy!  Of the four, I think I’d like to try Kimber next.  She was always my favorite Hologram.

Dolly Review: Junky Spot Exclusive Hujoo Phoebe

One of my favorite BJD companies is Hujoo.  My love for them started a few Christmas’ ago when I was shocked to find a Hujoo Wings full set under the tree from my brother.  I fell in love with the affordable, customizable BJD’s and have continued following the line ever since.

Our Hujoo Family

Our Anthro’s and their Nano’s

Along the same line, I am a huge fan of the Hujoo/The Junky Spot collaborations of the past few years, namely cat anthro’s Freya and Freyr (as well as their tiny Nano line).  Just when I thought they’d cornered the market on cuteness, they go and release another anthro, this one a completely new animal.

HuJoo/Junky Spot Phoebe (White and Light Grey)

HuJoo/Junky Spot Phoebe (White and Light Grey)

I’d like to introduce you to Phoebe, the newest 1/6 anthro Hujoo/Junky Spot collaboration.  Phoebe is part mouse, part girl.  Currently, she’s available in two colors: white and light grey.  She is made of ABS plastic, which makes her really affordable!  Like other ball jointed dolls, Phoebe (and her anthro friends) are strung.  They hold poses well and can stand on their own.

Hujoo/Junky Spot Phoebe

Hujoo/Junky Spot Phoebe

Hujoo/Junky Spot Phoebe

Hujoo/Junky Spot Phoebe

At 23cm tall, she’s the same height as most of the human sized Hujoo’s and anthro releases.  Her body seems unchanged from Freya’s release. Phoebe has joints at her shoulders, elbows, wrists, waist, hips and ankles. She has double jointed knees, as well.  The joints ‘click’ into place, so don’t worry if you hear the joints as you pose your Hujoo. Her neck has a wide range of motion thanks to the much improved headcap, which we’ll get to in a bit!

Phoebe Claw

Phoebe Claw

Phoebe has the same claw like hands and feet as Freya, as well.  Her body size allows her to wear most clothing aimed at other 1/6th size dolls.

1/6th Anthro's

1/6th Anthro’s

My dolls, for example, wear a lot of Barbie and My Scene outfits.

Phoebe Headcap

Phoebe Headcap

Gone are the troublesome headcap issues! Hujoo/The Junky Spot did fix the first editions terribly hard to use headcap for the second edition Freya’s and male anthro Freyr, but have now given Phoebe an entirely different heacap.

Phoebe vs Freyr

Phoebe vs Freyr

Phoebe vs Freyr

Phoebe vs Freyr

I can’t stress enough how amazing this new headcap is.  It works magnificently.  Unlike the older headcaps that sometimes needed the use of kitchen utensils when pulling them off, this new headcap is off in seconds.  Instead of trying to line pegs up into the right spots, Pheobe’s headcap has four insert points, at the top and bottom and on either side.  There are no pesky magnets inside the headcap, either.

Phoebe Headcap

Phoebe Headcap

There is now a stopper inside the headcap and a silver loop that holds the strings, as opposed to the two plastic pegs that used to hold the strings. Because they went away with the pegs inside the head, the eye mech is no longer included.  You will need to use eye putty to keep the eyes in place.  I’m fine with that, as it frees up space in what was a very cramped head.

Hujoo/Junky Spot Phoebe

Hujoo/Junky Spot Phoebe

Now, onto the fun part, the actual face mold.  It’s adorable.  Honestly?  I think I prefer this to the cats, which says a lot.  The recommended eye size for these guys is 14mm.  I think that may be a little too small, at least for my taste.  The light grey mouse is wearing two different 14mm eyes.  The white one is wearing larger teddy bear eyes I received at Puddle 2014.

Hujoo/Junky Spot Phoebe

Hujoo/Junky Spot Phoebe

Phoebe is sold blank, meaning there is no face up option.  A few years ago, this would have scared me, but now it doesn’t bother me.  I know my face up’s will never be as good as others on the internet, but it won’t stop me from trying to do my best on these blank faced Hujoo’s!  If the blank face idea is at all a deterrent to picking up these anthro’s (or any blank doll), don’t let it be.  It may seem like a daunting task and it may be hard at first, but at the end of the day, you’ll have a 100% unique BJD.

Hujoo/Junky Spot Phoebe

Hujoo/Junky Spot Phoebe

If you were to try to wig Phoebe, she’d wear a 6.5 wig.  However, these were designed to be wigless, like Freyr and Freya.  Of course, you’d have to modify any wig you bought to fit the mouse ears.

Phoebe Headcap

Phoebe Headcap

Gone is the embossed Hujoo logo on the back of the headcap.  Phoebe was released with a BJD Shop logo, which is the name of Hujoo’s factory store on their website.  Personally, I prefer the logo for Hujoo on the headcap, mostly because it’s way less pronounced and blends into the ABS much more than this new logo, which is very noticeable.

Hujoo/Junky Spot Phoebe

Hujoo/Junky Spot Phoebe

Of course, I’ll put up a post to show these guys off with their new face ups, but until then, all I can say is this.  Phoebe is a fantastic little Hujoo.  The collaborations  between Hujoo and The Junky Spot keep getting better and better.  I love the new headcap and the ease at which it can be pulled off or put on.  Also, the face mold?  Too cute for words.

HuJoo/Junky Spot Phoebe (White and Light Grey)

To order Phoebe, visit The Junky Spot.  Click Hujoo on the sidebar and select 24cm.  I would recommend ‘liking’ The Junky Spot on facebook, too, for site updates, product promo’s and contests.  And stay tuned– I’ll make sure to post photos of Phoebe with her brand new face up soon!!!

What do you think of Phoebe?  What animal would you like to see next? Who do you prefer– the cats or this new mouse? Share your thoughts below.

Sample Phoebe’s were sent to me for a fair and honest review. The opinions stated here (as always) are my own.
